A designer is a person who designs something. Perhaps the broadest definition is that provided by psychologist Herbert Simon: 'Everyone designs who devises courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones.'

As well as amateur designers, there are many professional designer occupations (see list of Examples). To become a professional designer usually requires study to degree level and certain work experience or training. Entry to some design professions is strictly controlled or limited by legal requirements, but use of the title 'designer' is generally un-regulated.

Working as a designer usually implies being creative in a particular area of expertise. Designers are usually responsible for developing the concept and making drawings or models for something new that will be made by someone else. Their work takes into consideration not only how something will look, but also how it will be used and how it will be made. There can be great differences between the working styles and principles of designers in different professions.

In the 1980s the term 'designer' began to be applied to products such as furniture and clothing that had distinctive aesthetics or were the work of certain 'signature' designers. So, for example, there were 'designer chairs' and 'designer jeans'. The term later came to be applied to anything that was ostentatiously created for a purpose, such as 'designer drugs', or even the 'designer stubble' worn by some fashionable men.

What questions can you ask an interior designer to confirm whether that person is really an interior designer?
Q. I have a person talking to me on the internet saying that she is an interior designer. Can any1 out there tell me some technical questions so that I can confirm that she is really one interior designer and not bluffing?

A. Hello there. For one thing, you can ask the person for a list of at least 10 of her most recent clients. Then you should meet her in a public place. Ask her to bring her complete portfolio... (of pictures) that is a fair representation of her work. The pictures should be prints... and not magazine pages ripped out. If you have her name and she tells you she is a legit business, you can call the Better Business Bureau in your city. Those are the best ways to not get scammed. And also... if she asks for a deposit before the work is complete... run the other way. Most reputable designers don't need to ask for money up front. Hope that helps.

How to become the greatest designer in the world?
Q. I am learning Graphic design (mostly self taught with mentor). I have decided I am going to be the greatest designer in the world- why aim for competent and eventually stop trying to be better, right? Anyway, I practice a lot, read design magazines and books, check out good design online and go to exhibitions as much as possible. Any suggestions on what else I can do to make myself a better designer?

A. I have wondered this myself, so I suggest contacting the people who you already admire. For instance, I think Apple Computers have the best graphic designers on the planet, and they are also shareholders with Disney in Pixar (Toy Story, etc.). Dreamworks (Shrek, etc) is equally good. Whichever direction you want to go in, ask those who are already there.

What are the chances of becoming a successful fashion designer?
Q. I'm almost 17, and I'm home schooled, so i take fashion design at a local community college. I already have professional sewing skills, and i can use professional sewing equipment, like sergers, ect.. and i was wondering if this a plus since i have started so much earlier then the average wanna be fashion designer? Also, what does it take to be a fashion designer? The clothes I make are inspired by the 60's pop art , the 80's, and some vintage styles. I like to make clothes that are really fashionable but wearable too, and i have made some handbags. Is that good enough or should i be more creative? And where can I buy wholesale fabric and other sewing notions like zippers, buttons, thread, ect. Any other info would be wonderful!
