Etymology

Middle English walet "wallet, bag, knapsack". Of uncertain origin. Possibly from an assumed Old Northern French *walet "bag, knapsack", of Germanic origin, from Proto-Germanic *wal- (“to roll”). More at walk, well, wallow.
